• F unds in a traditional IRA can generally be converted to a Roth IRA. • Funds in a 401(k) plan, 403(b) plan, or governmental 457(b) plan can generally be converted to a Roth IRA or be converted to a Roth account via an in-plan Roth rollover. • Recharacterization can no longer be used to unwind a Roth conversion. • Recharacterization is permitted with respect to other contributions. • Example: • An individual may contribute to a Roth IRA and, before the due date for the individual’s income tax return for that year, recharacterize it as a contribution to a traditional IRA.
