02.Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
If you are not eligible for an SSN (for example, if you are awaiting work authorization), you can apply for an ITIN from the IRS. An ITIN allows you to file taxes, open interest-bearing bank accounts, and in many cases, start building credit history. It is a critical tool for immigrants establishing financial footprints.
03.Protecting Your Numbers
Your SSN or ITIN is a high-value target for identity thieves. Never carry your Social Security card in your wallet. Memorize the number, lock the card in a safe place, and only share it with trusted institutions like banks, employers, and government offices.
